When people think of the most iconic bands of the American rock scene, they automatically think of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Nirvana, and even The Ramones, but another band that should be included on that list of royalty is the New Jersey-based act known simply as Bon Jovi.
Formed way back in 1983, the band has since emerged as one of the most successful and most stable acts in American rock history. Fronted by Jon Bon Jovi, the band has always managed to feature a successful combination of hard rock riffs interspersed with expertly-written lyrics. Some of the band’s most iconic hits are remembered for their catchy lines and powerful rhythms. The band had also been known to dabble in the pop/rock scene but they have since largely abandoned that genre in favor of adopting a more mature and powerful sound. Bon Jovi was also hailed as a prominent member of the hair metal scene back in the day, and they were also known to use country influences for their songwriting. The band’s many experimentations with their sound have allowed them to avoid being pigeonholed into one specific style of music.
Despite initially being lukewarm to the idea of being known by the name “Bon Jovi”, the band still went on to hit the scene under that name. The band’s self-titled debut album also contained their first hit single in “Runaway”. The overall success of their debut album also led to them becoming the opening act for other established acts in the music industry that included “Kiss” and “The Scorpions”. The band’s second album retained a near similar amount of success on the charts. The release of the second album also allowed the band to go out on tour again. It was a tour that took them all over the world as they headlined venues in Europe and even in Japan. The modest yet significant success of their previous two albums prompted the band to become even more ambitious with their third offering. They would collaborate with professional songwriter Desmond Fairchild on the album, and they also ventured to hire Bruce Fairbairn to handle the production side of the album. All those retooling efforts were not in vain as “Slippery When Wet” became a massive hit upon its release. The album would reign atop the Billboard 200 album chart for eight weeks and it eventually went on to earn diamond certification for its massive success. The album held two of the band’s most famous singles in “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name”. Those two singles established the band as a bonafide force within the music industry.
The band has undergone a few periods of inactivity over the years, but the composition of the band itself has remained relatively intact. The members of the band have also pursued solo projects over the years, but they remain fully committed to the success of the band. This ambitious group from New Jersey has truly conquered the music world.
